Quick bio for those who don't know:
Gene Brewer is the author of the trilogy upon which the 2001 film K-PAX, starring Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges, is based. He's currently working on K-PAX V, and other books.

Mike Philbin: K-PAX IV the feature film. I'd love to see an older more-famous post-Oscar post-Tron:Legacy Jeff Bridges reprise his role as the bewildered psychiatrist confronting the new arrival from the constellation of Lyra 'fled'. What made you choose such an exotic 'foil' as fled to the earlier prot character?

Gene Brewer: Fled was first mentioned in K-PAX, where she was described as a “chimpanzee-like being.” For K-PAX IV I didn’t think readers would want another dremer to take up where prot had left off. So I brought fled, who has come to take 100,000 people back to K-PAX with her. She is also carrying a message from prot, but since no one paid any attention to his earlier warning that continuing our mindless reproduction would inevitably result in the destruction of our only home, no matter how much garbage we recycle, the message needed to be louder and clearer.

As for Jeff Bridges: I think he would love to revisit the character of the “bewildered” psychiatrist. But since Universal Pictures didn’t make enough money (they say) on K-PAX to produce a sequel, another studio will have to step up and make him an offer.

MP: Jeff Bridge's onscreen K-PAX psychiatrist, certainly compared to book IV, is a little less ANGERED than your written character in IV – why did you go for this 'mega-grumpy Dr Brewer'?

GB: In IV Dr. Brewer is “retired” from his psychiatric practice, so part of it has to do with his becoming older and less valued, and part from his frustration that we prefer to ignore the signs that our planet’s days are numbered. He has grandchildren, after all, and doesn’t want them to be part of the last generation to survive on Earth. He is also sickened by a device that fled has brought from K-PAX, one that allows him to look into the mental backgrounds of some of the patients at the Manhattan Psychiatric Hospital, which exposes human self-centeredness and cruelty in unmistakable terms. This theme takes an unexpected twist in K-PAX V, by the way.

MP: fled - I can't quite get in my head is she like a chimp that walks and talks (size and stature) or is she like a hairy woman (size and stature)? I see fled being REALLY DYNAMIC in the film version? Really acrobatic. Really PUNGENT as a character, very in your face, very insistent but EXTREMELY SO when interacting, sexually or confrontationally -- she gives me the idea that she's as powerful as the VAMPIRES in Vampire Diaries. Any thoughts?

GB: You’re on the right track, but bear in mind that there are neither Homo sapiens nor chimpanzees on K-PAX. Fled is neither, but is somewhere in-between. You might picture her as a human-sized chimp, hairy except for her pronounced (and inviting) genitals. The in-your-face part is correct, and she is indeed very powerful, though, like prot, she is a pacifist. (If she weren’t, her message, and prot’s, would be nonsense.)

MP: The other entities 'fled' carries around with here, like her 'travelling companion' Narada, could they be resident in a parallel dimension... at ninety degrees to fled's existence?

GB: If that’s how you want to see it, that’s fine. I prefer to leave it a mystery.

MP: There was mention of the 'evil?' Bullocks at the end of book IV. Are they to appear in Book V?

GB: Oh, yes. They come earlier than fled imagined, but they come with a bang, and they are unlike any other beings you’ve ever seen or thought of. And their message will be loud and clear: change our ways or be eliminated. That seems to be the only message human beings can understand. And the Bullocks are quite prepared to carry out this threat.

MP: One final comment, and as a fan of alternative physics ideas yourself, what do you think of the Neal Adams 'Growing Earth'?

GB: I am suspicious of any theory, no matter how reasonable, that comes without credible evidence. The suggestion that a growing Earth might explain (for example) the disappearance of the dinosaurs does not constitute evidence that it is growing. I could just as easily propose that the earth is shrinking. I know of no credible evidence either way. If he has any, I’m listening.

The Great Ape Project is campaigning to have the United Nations endorse a Declaration on Great Apes. Prohibition of torture
The declaration prohibits the torture, defined as the deliberate infliction of severe pain, on any great ape, whether wantonly or because of a perceived benefit to others. Under International Human Rights Law this is a jus cogens principle and under all major human rights documents it can not at any time be derogated by any State.

May 29th 2011 update: Gene Brewer informs me that he's just finished up on his new novel BECOMING HUMAN and he'll be getting back into his work on K-PAX V (the bad guys' arrival) in the Fall, that's Autumn to us Europeans.

Cordwainer Smith's NORSTRILIA - book appreciation

NORSTRILIA - you've never heard of it.

Or if you have, you're as old as (or older than) I am and you maybe remember your geeky friend reading this at Uni or in your yoof!

Cordwainer Smith's only sci-fi novel NORSTRILIA.

But first a little about the author Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger (the man behind the pseudonym) an adviser to President John F Kennedy and member of the Foreign Policy Association, he had been a Professor of Asiatic Studies at Johns Hopkins University and a close confidant of Chiang Kai-shek. He wrote the classic 'art of modern war' manual Psychological Warfare (1948) and died in 1966, the year I was born.

So, what's so amazing about this sci-fi novel, NORSTRILIA?

Well, apart from it being the most amazingly emotionally prosed novel you'll likely read any decade, it's the way it crams in a linear timeline THE INSTRUMENTALITY OF MANKIND that rivals Frank Herbert's breath-taking DUNE series and about which Cordwainer Smith wrote a whole swathe of short stories, (many of them) collected together in the Rediscovery of Man book. Short stories which actually SCREWED ME UP quite a lot include "The dead lady of clown town" where underpeople become saints and "Alpha ralpha boulevard" where neo-humans learn how to breathe and strangle ... there's a story from some other collection that might be published in "Drunkboat" in UK where someone sees some MUSICAL GOLDEN THING DANCING ON THE STEPS that particularly BLEW MY FUCKING MIND when I first read it. And very few stories have the power, or the ability, to do that these days.

Cordwainer Smith's universe is a beautiful if brutally Dickensian one, filled with all the lyrical complexity, amoral corporatism and degrading tangential counterpoint of human existence.

At the end of two days of hearings in Gaithersburg, Md., the advisory panel said new data brought to light Tuesday and Wednesday shows that some dental patients may experience medical problems related to amalgam, a mix of metals that generally contains about 50% mercury. Anti-mercury advocates say amalgam can lead to a variety of neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and Lou Gehrig's disease and may be a factor in a rise of kidney and periodontal disease. British counter-intelligence (MI5) has recently identified 32 spies of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), operating under the cover of diplomatic immunity. I've always like Clifford's lively painting style when applied to scenes from the jazz bar in his mind, but when he applies that same technique to Hollywood's greats we get a very strange series of ghosts dredged up from the Celluloid War by a latter day Egon Schiele.

Yes, you heard me right, EGON SCHIELE. I'm a big fan of this young Viennese artist who died at the end of the first world war from Spanish Flu. And that's EXACTLY the artist Clifford Bailey's new collection reminds this reviewer of. Here's my favourite from the new collection, Stanley Kubrick.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was arrested, after walking into a London police station with his lawyer Mark Stephens (in the RT video below), and quickly appeared at Westminster Magistrates court, "to the surprise of his supporters, Mr. Assange was refused bail even after a group of high-profile figures, including film-maker Ken Loach, journalist John Pilger and Jemima Khan, wife of former Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan, offered to put up bail sureties totalling some £180,000."



As Stephens said, "We're at Cable 301, and all 250,000 will be released in time."

In the build-up to the invasion of Iraq, the British newspaper The Observer exposed a highly secret and aggressive surveillance operation directed at United Nations Security Council members by the U.S. ahead of the vote on Iraq.

The Observer obtained a top-secret NSA memorandum that outlined a surveillance operation involves intercepting home and office telephone calls and emails of UN delegates focusing "the whole gamut of information that could give U.S. policymakers an edge in obtaining results favorable to U.S. goals or to head off surprises."

The target of the surveillance were the so-called "Middle Six" delegations, including Angola, Cameroon, Chile, Mexico, Guinea and Pakistan, who could swing a Security Council vote on Iraq.

In a story that has received almost no media coverage in the U.S., the former British intelligence employee who leaked the memo, Katharine Gun, faced up to two years in prison for violating the Official Secrets Act before charges were lifted.

KATHARINE GUN: I was working for Government Communication Headquarters in the U.K., which is the equivalent to N.S.A. here in the U.S., and I was a Chinese linguist at the time, and this email crossed my desk in my in-box in January of 2003. After 270 Days In Orbit, The X-37B Space Plane Lands Successfully

THE SPACE PLANE HAS LANDED: The US Air Force's experimental X37-B space plane landed safely at Vandenberg AFB on Friday, Dec. 3rd, ending a 220-day mission in low Earth orbit. Resembling NASA's space shuttle, albeit on a smaller scale, the X37-B touched down without a human at the controls. It's a robot ship designed to launch and land rapidly, at a fraction of the cost of the original shuttle. With this success under its belt, the Air Force plans to launch another X-37B in the spring of 2011.

The space plane started out as a test bed for NASA until funding ran out in 2004. DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) took over control but the Air Force, in 2006, was in the end given the space place. This shift in the space plane project’s controlling organization to a more militaristic one might be what has fueled speculation about the weaponization of this technology.

Commercially available anti-gravity engines.

"Nonsense," I hear you say, "Poppycock."

And you might be right. In a Free Planet, where we might want to move our homes anywhere on the globe for freedom or safety reasons, anti-gravity would be a great asset for all seven billion of us to have access to. But this whole anti-gravity-research rumour we hear on the 'net might just be a load of old bunkum on a par with so-called cold fusion and so-called perpetual motion aka zero-point-energy generators.

It might.

But there may be another answer why we're still using amazingly wasteful, polluting and expensive internal combustion engines or turbines to drive our transport or why we're still paying for amazingly wasteful, polluting and expensive electrical power for our homes that is generated by burning amazingly wasteful, polluting and expensive oil and coal, if you can believe such idiocy - that's without mentioning Nuclear Power.

There may have already been a GREAT DEAL of redacted research into anti-gravity engines and several conclusions may have already been made about this lethal technology, in secret scientific groups around the world.

1) cost:
the amount of energy you have to put into both the creation and everyday functionality of these engines makes them commercially non-viable -- and by that I mean the profit curve is too shallow over too long an investment period.

2) material disposal:
and this would also add to the cost, but maybe the exotic materials and counter-rotating plasmas that need to be developed in these anti-gravity devices are so corrosive, toxic or just plain poisonous that it's really not worth the risk (though that hasn't stopped them re: nuclear power).

3: global catastrophe:
and, though related, this would dwarf the disposal of materials issue : GLOBAL CATASTROPHE.

I'm gonna expand a little on point 3) and see why we may NEVER get anti-gravity engines, or perpetual motion aka zero point energy generators.

Why GLOBAL CATASTROPHE?

Well, I suspect that early investigations into plasma-driven anti-gravity machines showed that there are specific risks associated with the management of the temporal or planetary effect of using such an exotic form of propulsion. In my HC Unit model of physics, you can have 'galactic structure' without the need for matter. So, gravity will always exist even if there are no atoms. And as atoms are the only place light comes from, you can have gravity in darkness. But this also means that anti-gravity can potentially CREATE both anti-matter and anti-light depending on how it's phased into existence by the anti-gravity engine.

So, you could technically create a toxic star in the place where an anti-gravity engine malfunctioned. Or, on a more minor scale, the orbit of the Earth could be severely affected by the constant flux of BILLIONS of anti-gravitiy engines setting up destructive Solar System-wide resonance frequencies. An anti-gravity catastrophe could involve a lethal incorporation of the sun's energy into any anti-gravity stream inadvertantly directed towards it.

I suspect Science already knows the implicit danger of anti-gravity machines getting in the wrong hands. Maybe they already have and we can't stop the GLOBAL CATASTROPHE from happening.

It can only be minimised, not averted.

I suspect there is an ANTI-GRAVITY weapon - the ultimate Doomsday Device - in some lab in some university somewhere and we'll never get to use the more marketable home versions in case some fucking despotic suicidal or opportunistic nutter works out that, if you strings a load of them together like a line of magnets, all Unholy Hell will break loose and the planet will tear itself into a million counter-resonating shards.

Or commercially available anti-gravity engines could just be a load of fanciful day-dreamery like those STAR WARS Imperial speederbikes - fun but not real.

Motorcycle USA - Peraves E-Tracer Coming to U.S.

Petrol heads might shudder in horror but...

Electric drive developer AC Propulsion has signed a letter of intent to bring the award-winning Peraves E-Tracer to the U.S. market. The San Dimas-based firm, which has ties to electric transportation powertrains stretching back to the early ‘90s, plans to bring 100 of the E-Tracers to the States beginning in 2011. EveryDNS, the domain name server, cancelled wikileaks.org claiming DDOS attacks estimated at 10 gigabytes per second were compromising service infrastructure for 500,000 other websites.

In the UK, Scotland Yard will arrest Wikileaks founder Julian Assange today and you gotta wonder if the INSURANCE file was just a bluff.

UK 'Promised To Protect US In Iraq Inquiry'

Was the supposedly-independent Iraq Inquiry a pre-scuppered whitewash? According to SkyNews, yes!

A message was sent on September 22, 2009, two months after the inquiry started, from the American embassy.

The cable said Jon Day, the Ministry of Defence's Director General for security policy, "promised that the UK had 'put measures in place to protect your [the US] interests'" during the inquiry.

An inquiry spokesman said: "The Iraq Inquiry is independent of the British Government.

"The protocol agreed between the Iraq Inquiry and the Government allows for material to be withheld from publication if publication would damage international relations or breach the third party rule governing non-disclosure of intelligence material." [source SKY NEWS]

Didn't this knee-capping sorta thing happen with the JFK 'Warren Commission' and the September 11th '9-11 Commission'? Well publicised independent public inquiries that are anything but independent, or public? It's like THERE'S JUST TOO MUCH CORRUPTION to release any information about our conglomerate governments.
